Itinerary
Every part can be changed to suit your group.
-
Day 1 Hanoi to Quan Ba and Yen Minh
We pick you up at your hotel in Hanoi at around 6:30 AM and drive north on the highway, through tea hills and the valleys of Tuyen Quang, to Ha Giang city, about 300 kilometres and six hours with stops. After lunch we start the loop, climbing to the Quan Ba Heaven Gate, where the twin rounded hills known as the fairy mountains rise from the valley below. We continue through pine forests and limestone peaks to Yen Minh, a small town in a green valley, stopping for photos along the way. Dinner and overnight in a local hotel or family homestay.
-
Day 2 Lung Cu, the Hmong King’s Palace and Dong Van
A full day on the Dong Van Karst Plateau, a UNESCO Global Geopark. We cross the Tham Ma Pass and the nine bends of Chin Khoanh, then visit the Vuong family palace in Sa Phin, built in the early 20th century for the Hmong King, with its carved wood and stone courtyards. We continue to Lung Cu and climb to the flag tower close to the northernmost point of Vietnam, with views across the border into China. On the way back we pass the Sung La valley and its earth-walled Hmong houses. In the late afternoon we arrive in Dong Van and walk through its small old quarter. Overnight in Dong Van.

Day 3 Ma Pi Leng Pass and Return to Hanoi
Early morning is the best time for the Ma Pi Leng Pass, often called the king of Vietnam’s mountain passes. The road is cut into the cliffs high above the Nho Que River, which glows turquoise far below, and we stop at the viewpoints for photos and a coffee. We descend to Meo Vac, then drive back through Yen Minh to Ha Giang city for lunch. In the afternoon we return to Hanoi, arriving at your hotel at around 9:00 PM. If you prefer a gentler finish, we can add a night in Ha Giang city and drive back the next morning.
