About Cambodia
Temples, Rivers And A Warm Welcome
Cambodia is home to Angkor, the capital of the Khmer Empire and one of the greatest religious sites in the world. Hundreds of temples lie scattered across the forest near Siem Reap, from the vast towers of Angkor Wat to the smiling faces of the Bayon and the tree-wrapped ruins of Ta Prohm.
Beyond the temples, Cambodia is a country of flat rice fields dotted with sugar palms, stilt house villages and slow brown rivers. The Tonle Sap, Southeast Asia’s largest lake, swells to several times its size each rainy season, and whole communities live on and around its water.
Phnom Penh, the capital, sits where the Mekong meets the Tonle Sap. It is a lively city of royal palaces, markets and riverside cafes, and also the place to learn about the country’s painful recent history. Cambodians are famously warm and welcoming, and a visit here pairs naturally with southern Vietnam.
Best time to visit
November to March, when it is dry and less hot. April and May are very hot; June to October brings rain, green fields and fewer visitors.
Getting there
Flights to Siem Reap and Phnom Penh from Saigon and Hanoi, or by speedboat up the Mekong from Chau Doc to Phnom Penh.
How long to stay
3 to 6 days, or longer with the coast and countryside.
Good for
Temples, history, culture, countryside cycling.
