Hue Countryside by Bicycle: Markets, Bridges and Village Crafts

A gentle ride from the city into rice fields, craft villages and a family lunch.

This day shows the everyday side of Hue. We start in a busy local market, then cycle out on small roads to the rice fields east of the city, stopping at a tiled-roof bridge, an incense making family and a conical hat workshop before a farmhouse lunch.

Tour highlights

  • Walk through Dong Ba market with your guide
  • Cycle flat country roads through rice fields and villages
  • Visit the Thanh Toan tiled-roof bridge from the 18th century
  • See how incense sticks and conical hats are made by hand
  • Lunch with a farming family in their garden house

Itinerary

Every part can be changed to suit your group.

  1. Morning Dong Ba Market and Ride to Thanh Toan

We meet at your hotel at 8:00 AM and start with a walk through Dong Ba market, where locals shop for fresh food, flowers and household goods. We then get on the bikes and leave the city on small roads, riding past rice fields, canals and village temples. The first main stop is the Thanh Toan bridge, a wooden bridge with a tiled roof built in the 18th century, where farmers still rest in the shade. The ride is flat and easy, mostly on small concrete lanes and village paths with very little traffic. Along the way we pass buffalo grazing by the canals, children cycling to school and farmers drying rice on the roadside, with plenty of stops for photos.

  2. Afternoon Village Crafts and Farmhouse Lunch

We continue to a family who make incense sticks by hand and to a workshop where women shape and stitch conical hats. Lunch is served at a farming family’s garden house, with dishes made from their own vegetables. In the afternoon we cycle back toward the city, or ride in the support vehicle if you prefer, and return to your hotel at around 3:00 PM. These crafts have been passed down in the same families for generations, and our hosts are happy to let you try your hand at rolling incense or stitching a hat. It is a simple, warm way to understand how villages around Hue still live from their own skills and their land.
